Cranberry sauce is an essential Christmas side dish, but I love it all year around. Cranberries are seasonal, but can be made at any time if you have some frozen ones! This is my sugar free Christmas cranberry sauce recipe. When I say sugar free I mean refined sugar free!
I used honey and cinnamon as a sweetener, so it is healthier than traditional cranberry sauce which uses refined sugar that is devoid of nutrients. Honey is a source of B vitamins (1,2,3,5, and 6) as well as minerals such as calcium, copper, iron, manganese, magnesium, potassium, phosphorous, sodium and zinc.
It is really quick and easy to make your own cranberry sauce, and it should keep for a couple of weeks in the fridge (if it lasts that long!)
Zest and juice of one organic orange
300g fresh cranberries
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3 tablespoons honey
Put the cranberries, orange zest, orange juice, cinnamon and water in a pan.
Gently simmer for 5 minutes until the cranberries break down.
Add the honey and stir through and simmer for a couple of minutes more until it reaches the desired consistency.
Let the sauce cool, and serve it as a side dish
